General Rules

Here are some of the basic rules and mistakes to avoid when designing an Oiraon! As Oiraons have their own culture and lore, there are some items and designs that should not be included when making a design.

Colour and Patterns

  • Oiraons can be based on patterns of birds in real life, your own artistic freedom or even licensed characters
(e.g. Naruto Oiraon, Pokemon Oiraon, lord of the rings Oiraon) However, you may not use the Oiraon that is based on licensed characters commercially. That would be things like making stickers, prints or merchandise and selling them to others. You can, of course, make these, but they must be for your personal use only.

  • They may have any colours and patterns, even iridescent or metallic appearing!  But, they cannot change colours* or glow.

    • Unnatural patterns are allowed, an example would be hearts or words, but they cannot be hateful or sensitive in any way.

    • Some patterns/markings such as rock shag eye mark may not be used if the Oiraon does not have the trait.

    • *Oiraons may change their colours if they have the Seasonal Coat mutation with up to 4 alternate colour schemes.  Only the colour of their feathers changes, which means that beaks, eyes, the inside of mouths and legs cannot change colours.

  • Oiraons will have to be based on one of the 5 biome types as listed here

    • (Unless it's a hybrid, then it can have the body type/traits of 2 different biomes)

  • Colours of non-feathered areas

    • Eyes (sclera, pupil and iris), mouths, tongues legs, spines (if posessing the trait) and claws may be of any colour as long as it does not glow.  These areas cannot change colours even with the Seasonal Coat mutation is on the individual unless they are redesigned.

    • Blood and flesh must be red while bones and teeth (with toothed beak) must be ivory or white.

  • Tattoos, Dyes

    • Tattoos are not possible unless the Oiraon is "bald" in some areas, such as the head in condor mane.  Featherless legs cannot be tattooed, as the scales do not allow for ink to permeate the skin.

    • Dyes can be applied to any feathered part of the Oiraon, they do not require any traits, and follow the same rule as regular markings, and are regarded as such.  Lore-wise, the Oiraon would have to reapply these dyes every moult.

Accessories

Oiraons are allowed to have accessories on them with some exceptions

  • They are not allowed to use role specific accessories or accessories that look similar to the design until they have unlocked the role. However, guest artists and staff may create adopts that come with the role.

    • (Guide to role accessories)

  • They are not allowed to have metal accessories (e.g. gold band, metal prosthetics) as they haven't unlocked metallurgy yet.

    • This also includes any accessories that require fire to be used and for the accessory to be shapen such as glass.

    • They may wear or have raw, unrefined metals or jewels that they may have found in a rock slide or in a riverbank, but it cannot be shapen, nor cut.  Although, naturally tumbled gems are alright.

  • Accessories may not mimic traits that the Oiraon does not possess. (e.g. A head accessory mimicking the Casque trait).

  • If the accessory the Oiraon wears greatly obscures the design, then a reference of the Oiraon devoid of accessories must be provided so the traits can be seen clearly. If you are unsure, feel free to contact us on Discord or Instagram.

    • (Guide to role accessories)

  • They may wear accessories made from organic materials such as furs, plants and bones

    • Plants: If their accessories include live plants, please state that the plants are not growing out of them, but rather just placed on their body.  For instance, a flower crown would be acceptable, but a sprout growing from the top of the head would not.

    • Bones: If it is bone, they may not wear a skull on their head unless they possess the Hunter profession (see role accessories here).  The bone may be carved or painted with naturally obtained colours.

    • Cloth: If it is cloth, please take into consideration that Oiraons are a relatively primitive species which reflects in their clothing style.  They will not wear sci-fi based clothing.  We suggest you research traditional clothing from cultures around the world to get an idea of what they may wear, but please do it respectfully as to avoid cultural appropriation. Also, please do not use a poncho unless your Oiraon possesses the Artisan role (see role accessories here.)

Anatomy

  • Each biome will have its own unique set of traits, though, some traits may overlap between biomes, please check here before designing to ensure that you are using the right traits for your biome.

    • Most of the traits are inspired by actual birds in real life, so if you are uncertain how the trait is supposed to look, you can search up the bird for better reference. However, as we are a fantasy species, you do not have to follow the look exactly and you can slightly adjust them to fit your own style.

    • The default claws of an Oiraon strictly have 3 front claws and one rear. They are bird talons and do not resemble paws. The back claws on an Oiraon's feet are on both the front and back legs, they do not act as a dewclaw and completely touch the ground when standing. (Example).  They do not have pawpads, but false-pawpad markings are permitted.

  • Default wing trait of Oiraon can be based on different wing types that birds have. (E.g. elliptical wings, hovering wings).

    • As long as there are no massive differences in the feather placement or conflicts with the other wing trait, you may feel free to experiment with the wing style for your Oiraon. (Example)

    • Cannot be extremely small (size of head) or extremely large (more than twice the size of body length).

  • Member-made Oiraons may only have up to 1 mutation trait per design

    • (If you purchased the mutation add-on, you are only allowed to add 1 mutation to your Oiraon). Oiraons with 2 or more mutation traits are exclusive and can only be purchased from official adoptables by staff or guest artists.

  • Multiple traits in the same category may be used together as long as they do not conflict with each other

    • (E.g Double tail - Epic and Default - Common) would be allowed.

    • (E.g Comb - common and Cockatoo - Uncommon) would not be allowed.

  • Traits that hinder flight

    • Oiraons with either fin wings or flying fish wings are unable to fly or glide at all.

    • Oiraons with Peacock tail, Fish tail or Curtain tail may have some difficulty flying, although are still able to fly.

    • Drakes cannot fly, as they do not possess wings.

  • Feathers and "hairstyles"

    • Oiraons do not possess hair nor fur, and they only have feathers.  Though, their feathers may come in many different textures without the usage of a trait such as curly, straight, fluffy or messy/mangled.  They may also be stylized to be fur-like.  All feather types found on chicken breeds are considered free to use unless they are too long.

    • Oiraons may have "hair" on their heads that resemble fluffy bangs, and can be any style, but they cannot be too long without the usage of the Ruff or Condor mane trait.  On the head, "hair" is considered too long if it goes past the bottom of the head.  On the neck, too long is considered when the feathers are able to be tied in some sort of way.

Injuries

  • You may design an injured Oiraon, however if the injuries overlap with our mutation traits (Drake - wingless/ Wyvern - only 2 legs), you would have to provide a full body reference of them without the injuries to avoid confusion.

    • If your Oiraon is missing at least one wing, they may not be drawn in a flying pose.  Functional wing prosthetics do not exist, and if your Oiraon is wearing one, then it may only be used for aesthetics.

    • If your Oiraon is missing any limbs and has a prosthetic on, it may not have moving parts.  An accepted prosthetic would be a sturdy branch cut down to size and fixed onto the body using dried out vines or rope.  It would not be able to move at the "elbow" nor the "wrist." An entirely functioning prosthetic with fully moving talons and full maneuverability would not be acceptable
