Oiraon Civilisation

There are 5 main biomes in which Oiraons live in:

  1. Desert

  2. Arctic

  3. Mountain

  4. Water

  5. Forest

They have evolved different body types and traits to best adapt to these environments. However, there are also hybrid Oiraons that are able to thrive in multiple biomes at once and have the corresponding traits of the different biomes.

Within the biomes, Oiraons would also live in different structures and have different styles of architecture. For instance, forest Oiraons live in interconnected nests among the trees as they have a large social group while certain water Oiraons may live on cliff sides near bodies of water to defend against predators. The specific style of architecture would also depend on the tribes themselves and the environment they are used to living in.

Tribe:

Some Oiraons stay in groups of 4-5 adults with around 6 hatchlings/teens in a tribe. However, certain Oiraons such as the forest and water Oiraons can be found in much larger group size of up to 20-30 adult members due to the higher abundance of food and resources in the region. Each tribe will appoint their own leader with the remaining members serving as hunters, artisans, healers or caretakers etc depending on their skills.  Young Oiraons will usually be taught in a small group setting, usually taught by their mothers or elders of the tribe.  For tribes such as the arctic or mountain Oiraons, young Oiraons are usually taught by following adults into the wilderness and observing their actions, rather than elders teaching them, as there may be a lack of such mentors due to the harsh conditions and small tribe size.  Typically, tribes are mono-biomed, meaning the members are composed of only one biome type, but sometimes there are multi-biomed tribes which are more often found living in water or forest biomes.

Socialization:

Oiraons are fairly social creatures and often interact with neighbouring tribes. As they are beings of high intelligence, Oiraons are capable of communicating in a chirp-like language with each other. Oiraon head feathers are used in expressing their emotions much like ears on a cat or dog. Certain Oiraons have also become skilled in trades like crafting and healing, the different tribes will often engage in trade with each other to obtain unique materials and resources. Oiraons also have wooden coins as currency called Keyu, with the heads of Archi and Sei carved on opposite ends. They would often play games using the coins with Archi representing a win while Sei representing a loss.

Warfare:

Normally, Oiraons rarely engage in war and are generally a peaceful society, however when territory disputes arise, the 2 tribes will participate in a battle to determine the rights to the land. Each tribe will choose their best fighter to send to the battle to minimize bloodshed and damage to the rest of the members. During the battle, the fighters will wear traditional armour and weapons of their tribe. The battle will last until one of the fighters have been rendered incapable of continuing the fight (dead/injured/passed out) or have admitted defeat (rare because the honour and survival of their clan depends on them). After which, the defeated tribe will leave the territory to search for a new place to live.

Professions:

Oiraons have 5 main professions that they are able to specialize into, as some of the roles require years of training, not all tribes would have all of the 5 professions and may engage into trading to obtain the services or goods they require. Oiraons without profession will just remain as members of the tribe and handle the day to day needs of the tribe, they will not wear any role-specific accessories. (The professions may be unlocked by doing quest art prompts or purchasing it directly, for more information: Professions)

  • Priest - Priest Oiraons serve in temples that are dedicated to one of the main creator gods (Sei or Archi). They do not belong to an individual tribe but instead help to resolve conflicts between the tribes in the region and perform rituals to honour the gods. They often wear a headdress consisting of feathers and animal bone as a sign of their devotion.

  • Hunter - Hunters are the main providers of food for the tribe. Although their main job is to hunt prey, they may also gather fruits and berries depending on the type of Oiraon and the biome. Hunters are the most adept at fighting and would often serve as the warriors of the tribe in territorial disputes. Hunters would wear skull armour made from the upper jaws of creatures in their biome when hunting or fighting.

  • Healers - Healers are invaluable members of a tribe and help to care for the injured Oiraons. Healers usually train alongside priests in the temples and study medicinal knowledge for many years before being qualified to be a healer. Not every tribe is able to afford a healer and some tribes may seek the aid of healers in other friendly tribes when a member is injured. Healers would carve a staff filled with runes to symbolize having the blessing of the god Sei in performing their duties.

  • Artisan - Artisan Oiraons are the skilled craftsmen of the tribe, They excel in  making handicrafts and products from raw materials. Artisan may refer to an artist, a jeweller or even a tailor etc. Tribes of different biomes may have different types of artisan who produce special goods from the materials in the region. These artisan goods will be used during trading with other tribes. Artisans wear ponchos to protect themselves from getting stained by the raw material (e.g paint) when working on their craft.

  • Beast Master - Beast Master are talented Oiraons who are said to have an affinity for animals. They are able to connect with even the most difficult creatures and tame animal from beyond their biomes. Unlike most Oiraons, many beast master often wander far away from their tribe and travel to new biomes to tame new animals. Beast Masters are highly respected Oiraons and their assistance do not come cheap.

Language:

Oiraons communicate with each other in chirps. However, they have also developed a written form of language for easier communication and recording of knowledge. As they use their claws to write, the letters are more simplistic and consist of mainly straight lines. Here is a basic translation of their letters to our alphabet:

Oiraons do not have the letter W in their alphabet, instead, they replace the letter for W with the letter for V
